Mahanagar Gas Ltd. (MGL) is set to expand its reach to meet the surging demand for compressed natural gas (CNG) in Mumbai and its neighboring areas by the end of 2025. With over 10.97 lakh vehicles relying on MGL’s CNG across 366 stations in Mumbai, Thane, Mira-Bhayander, Navi Mumbai, and more, the need for additional contracts has become increasingly apparent.

Mr. Ashu Shinghal, the Managing Director of Mahanagar Gas Limited, expressed the company’s readiness to explore new contracts to meet the growing demand for natural gas. During the India Energy Week (IEW), Singhal revealed, “Right now, we are conformable with the existing arrangements. We have already added one contract. So, maybe by 2025-end or next financial year (FY26), we will look for more contracts.”

MGL’s commitment to meeting consumer needs is evident through its extensive network of CNG and PNG supplies. Currently, MGL caters to around 10.97 lakh vehicles using CNG and nearly 26.82 lakh households with piped natural gas (PNG). The company has further secured a reliable supply of domestically-produced natural gas to ensure a steady flow of resources.

MGL’s Expansion Plans

Singhal elaborated on the company’s ambitious expansion plans, stating, “Currently, on an average for 9M FY25, it’s around 4.05 million standard cubic meters per day (mscmd). But going forward, we are seeing a growth of 10 per cent, at least. So, 0.4 mscmd will be added every year.” With the expected increase in demand, MGL is gearing up to enhance its capacity and infrastructure to meet the growing needs of its consumers.

In a bid to keep up with the rising gas consumption, MGL is focusing on various sectors such as industrial and commercial, where they have seen a significant growth of 14% in the current fiscal year. Singhal highlighted the company’s efforts to expand its pipeline network, introduce new schemes in CNG, and boost the adoption of LNG-powered vehicles.

MGL’s Commitment to Sustainability

MGL’s dedication to sustainable practices is evident through its initiatives to promote LNG-powered vehicles and establish retail outlets in partnership with Baidyanath LNG. Singhal shared, “We have opened a joint venture company for LNG retail outlets with Baidyanath LNG. One LNG station was already operational with MGL and one was recently started in Aurangabad by the JV.” The company’s forward-thinking approach towards cleaner energy sources aligns with the global shift towards sustainability.

As MGL continues to expand its infrastructure and services to meet the escalating demand for natural gas, it stands as a testament to the company’s commitment to providing reliable and eco-friendly energy solutions to its consumers. With a focus on innovation, sustainability, and customer satisfaction, Mahanagar Gas Ltd. is poised to lead the way in the energy sector for years to come.
