HDFC Bank’s Deposit Base Surpasses Advances Post-Merger

In a significant financial development, HDFC Bank’s deposit base has exceeded its advances for the first time following the merger of its parent housing finance company with the bank in July 2023. This milestone was revealed in the bank’s business figures for Q3 FY25, which were disclosed in a filing with the stock exchanges. The country’s largest private bank showcased a notable shift in its financial dynamics.

Strategic Slowdown in Advances Growth

One key aspect highlighted in the report is the deliberate slowdown in advances growth as part of the bank’s strategic approach. While this move is aimed at optimizing operations, it is expected to impact margins due to fewer incremental deposits being utilized as loans. Notably, a significant portion of the deposit growth during the quarter stemmed from term deposits. Conversely, the decline in advances was primarily driven by a 10% reduction in the bank’s corporate loan book.

Impact on Financial Landscape

The latest figures indicate that HDFC Bank’s deposits reached Rs 25.6 lakh crore as of December 31, 2024, reflecting a 15.8% increase from the previous year. On the other hand, gross advances stood at Rs 25.4 lakh crore, marking a 3% rise in the same period. This contrast underscores the bank’s strategic realignment towards a more balanced financial structure.

Future Growth Projections

Looking ahead, the bank’s Managing Director & CEO, Sashidhar Jagdishan, outlined a forward-looking strategy during the Q2 FY25 earnings call. He emphasized the goal of reducing the credit-deposit ratio faster than previously anticipated. While the current growth trajectory may be slower than the industry average, the bank aims to align with or surpass system growth rates in the coming years.

Overall, HDFC Bank’s evolving financial landscape underscores the dynamic nature of the banking sector. As the institution navigates strategic shifts and adapts to changing market conditions, its performance stands as a testament to its resilience and adaptability in a competitive industry landscape.
