Faster Automatic EPFO Claim Settlement Process for PF Subscribers – Times of India
In a move that promises to bring New Year cheer to Provident Fund subscribers, the Labour and Employment Ministry has set up a five-person committee tasked with streamlining the auto claim settlement process at EPFO. This initiative aims to expedite claim settlements while doing away with manual processing requirements, benefiting over 75 million EPFO members.
EPFO currently allows automatic settlement of partial withdrawals up to Rs 1 lakh for housing, education, and marriage purposes, a significant increase from the previous limit of Rs 50,000 for medical expenses. Moreover, automatic settlement is now available for all pension claims under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPF) or provident fund through EPFO, subject to application validation.
The committee, led by G Madhumita Das, the ministry’s financial advisor, is working towards making the automatic claim settlement process more technically savvy and seamless, with the goal of reducing rejections significantly. The findings from the committee are expected to be presented by mid-next month, according to a senior government official.
EPFO Report Card
Internal evaluations reveal that currently, only 40% of claims are successfully settled automatically, while over 60% face rejection due to validation issues. This leads to rejected applications requiring manual processing, resulting in a prolonged settlement timeline for subscribers.
The plan moving forward is to eliminate unnecessary validations that contribute to the high rejection rate, as stated by the official. Presently, applications must pass through 27 back-end validation checks before the settlement processing can commence.
In the fiscal year 2023-24, EPFO processed a total of 44.5 million claims. Of these, 13.9 million claims were settled within three days, 14.3 million within 10 days, 14.5 million within 20 days, and 1.8 million required over 20 days for settlement. The settled claims included 40.9 million provident fund (PF) claims, 3.45 million pension-related claims, and benefits, along with 75,000 insurance claims under the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI).
